Another
sonic adventurer goes by the name Aphex Twin.
Making music for no one but himself, Aphex Twin has always existed in a
bit of a parallel universe doing whatever he wants, however he wants, while
continually making exciting music lacking any annoying overt intellectual
overtones. With his own label, Rephlex, he has issued numerous albums by
his contemporaries (µ-ziq
among others) who share his love of fucked up art. |

The
boundaries are not always pushed in the most obvious ways. Underworld
is respected as one of the most important acts in the world for their ability
to fuse the dynamics and structures of traditional rock with the beauty
and techno-soul of the electronic world. Forming from the ashes of the late
eighties Underworld, who mostly mined the synth pop vein, this new version
added brilliant UK DJ Darren Emerson and immediately took off. Their
stunning live shows have only added to the respect they get from critics
and fans alike. Their music is always breathtaking, completely unique, and
compelling. |

As
the Underworld fuse elements of rock into techno, The
Chemical Brothers take from both the rock and the hip-hop
world, although always with a great deal of respect and reverence. Among
the people appearing on their album, Dig Your Own Hole, are
Kool Herc and Keith Murray (old and new school hip-hop) and
Jonathon from Mercury Rev and Noel Gallagher from Oasis.
Their influences are as broad and expansive as their sounds. Initially signed
to the same label as Underworld, Junior Boy's Own (UK), they reaped
the benefits of having widespread exposure early on, but have since parlayed
that into an extraordinary career. Currently poised to lead America into
a new era where electronic music is no longer an unknown genre, but one
that sits right along side Jazz and Classical as a timeless musical form.
