Fluke
have been a fixture on the European electronic scene for many years and
are finally being recognized in America for their efforts. Having started
their own label and publishing company many years ago, they have always
played a much bigger role than just being musicians. Usually taking their
time and releasing new tracks infrequently, 1997 looks to be a big year
for Fluke in America and Europe. They are readying a new album, scheduled
to be released in the summer which will include many new tracks and a couple
of remixes. Provisionally called "Risotto" this record will
be released in America on Astralwerks.

Much like techno is considered purely American in origin, Drum and Bass or Jungle is often considered uniquely English. Born out of the "Hardcore" scene of the late '80s, (where the Prodigy began), the sound progressed, getting harder, faster and darker until it reached a point where it was unlike anything and could be mutated and changed to fit all kinds of moods and sounds. That is where we are today. In pure sonic terms, Drum and Bass is undoubtedly the most inventive, exciting and mind blowing music being made. The best examples of it are British in origin, but it is being made everywhere, with each culture adding its own nuances and flavor to the mix.

The
two most important artists of this style are Goldie and Photek.
Goldie, has a charisma that is undeniable while
still being completely over the top and mind blowing. Photek
is the craftsman, perfecting each sound, each beat, shaping them until they
flow with ease and precision. He approaches a record like a Japanese calligrapher
- every brush stroke with meaning and purpose. Both are at the forefront
of the sound and will be making important timeless music for years. |
