Fluke
are one of the pioneering 1990's era electronic bands to make a beachhead
in America during the time when electronic music was just starting to make
inroads. This UK trio (Jon Fugler, Mike Tournier, and Mike Bryant) who had
been sharing living and studio space originally started out as a poppy house
style act then switching to trip hop before finally hitting on their most
successful formula of big-beat infused techno.
It was the buzz from Fluke's white label 12" of "Thumper! that brought the band to the attention of the electronic dance community with Creation eventually signing them and releasing their debut album The Techno Rose Of Blighty. Shortly after this release, Fluke signed to Virgin's Circa Records and released a live album, Out In Essence, followed by their second studio album Six Wheels On My Wagon featuring highlight tracks "Electric Guitar (Humbucker) and "Groovy Feeling." Fluke's next album OTO, found them moving into a more down tempo style netting them two UK Top 40 singles ("Bubble" and "Tosh"). After a two year hiatus, Fluke burst forth with a more powerful, beefier sound launching their most successful album to date, Risotto. The combination of placement in top selling video games (including Wipeout XL and World Cup '98), the classic video for "Atom Bomb" (which MTV though influential enough to include in their first 20 years retrospective), as well as numerous usages in film, TV and commercials netted the band two more UK Top 40 singles ("Absurd" and "Atom Bomb") and made it one of the best selling electronic albums in America. |
